Psychosocial Recovery Coach (holistic/complex needs)

This is a specific budget in your plan that is set aside for recovery coaching or support coordinator and in your planning meeting you can request a Support coordinator or Recovery Coach.

What is the Difference?

A support coordinator

A support coordinator helps people understand and use their NDIS plan to achieve their goals. They work with participants to identify and connect them with services and supports, and to build skills and confidence.

What they do

  • Help participants understand their NDIS plan and budget

  • Connect participants with NDIS support providers, community representatives, and other services

  • Help participants build skills to use and coordinate their supports

  • Help participants find a mix of services and supports that work for them

  • Help participants engage with community and government services

  • Provide support in emergency situations

  • Help participants ensure measures are put in place to prevent ongoing emergencies

A recovery coach does what a support coordinator does while also integrating a lived experience recovery approach. by helping people with psychosocial disabilities to increase their independence, social participation, and economic participation. They do this by helping people develop strategies to achieve their goals and build resilience.

What do recovery coaches do?

  • Develop relationships: Build a relationship with the person they are working with

  • Identify goals: Help people identify their goals and develop strategies to achieve them

  • Provide support: Continue to provide support even when needs increase

  • Increase capacity: Help people build capacity, resilience, and decision making

  • Help with assessments: Help with initial meetings, assessments, and reviews

  • Develop action plans: Help people develop action plans and relapse prevention plans

  • Connect with supports: Help people connect with relevant supports

Who are recovery coaches?

  • Recovery coaches are mental health specialists who have undergone specialist training

  • Many recovery coaches have lived experience with a psychological condition

  • Recovery coaches are NDIS funded workers

A specialist recovery coach can be helpful as they can have experience in certain areas and specialties.

For example neurodivergence, complex presentations, psychosocial with physical crossover etc, working across multiple systems not just ndis.

What are some things we do :

  • Align your service to the principles and ethics you set out at the beginning

  • If you don’t have any principles or ethics yet help you establish some.

  • Suggest policies and procedures that will help you stay aligned with your principles and ethics.

  • We can only make suggestions, we can not make you follow them or put them into practice.

  • Draw up accesibility standards and policies if this aligns with your organisational principles and ethics.

  • Suggest ongoing organisational training and wellbeing programs to help maintain your organisations goals, standards and ethics.

  • Training on accessibity, self care, vicarious trauma, policies and procedures, supported decision making and anything that will help your organisation transition.
